Showbiz programs covered by airtime rule

By MIKHA FLORES

A Comelec official cautioned candidates Monday that appearing as guests in entertainment shows will be counted against their airtime limits.

James Jimenez, chief of the election commission’s Education and Information Department said appearances are not prohibited but “there will be implications” on their time limit. “It’s not just a possibility, it’s a certainty precisely because it’s clear that they intended for that to be a television ad,” he said.

The reminder came after senatorial candidates Ernesto Maceda and Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel guested in separate non-news shows. Maceda appeared in TV 5’s Wowowillie, a noontime variety show while Hontiveros guested in ABS-CBN’s Gandang Gabi Vice, an entertainment talk show.
