A Facebook post claims that Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva has resigned after his photos and videos in the company of a Public Works engineer who had been tagged in anomalous flood control projects have gone viral.

This is not true. There has been no such announcement from Villanueva, who remains a member of the 20th Congress.

Published on Aug. 28, the post read:

KAKAPASOK LANG! VILLANUEVA NAIYAK TULUYAN NG NAGPAALAM, NAG-RESIGN NA SA PWESTO,BUKING NA NI PBBM.”

(Just in! Villanueva cried, ultimately bid goodbye, resigned from his position, caught by PBBM).

Villanueva has not resigned as a senator. He was still majority leader at the Senate’s plenary session on Sept. 3.

Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva has not resigned. He is still an active member of the 20th Congress.

The senator from Bulacan came under fire after photos and videos of him with Henry Alcantara, formerly a district engineer of the Department of Public Works and Highways in the province, surfaced and went viral on social media.

Alcantara admitted in a Sept. 2 public hearing at the House of Representatives that he had signed contracts of P224.9 million worth of “ghost” and substandard flood control projects in Baliwag City and Calumpit town.

In a Sept. 3 interview, Villanueva denied having transactions with Alcantara, saying that his photos with Alcantara that have gone viral were taken during a public event and that other government officials also have photos with the district engineer when they visit DPWH projects in Bulacan . He added:

(The video, picture you’re saying, all officials have that with him. He’s an official. So if you go to DPWH in Bulacan — whether the president, secretaries or senators — everybody has that. Why are they singling me out?)
