SEVEN out of 10 Filipinos oppose amending the Constitution to let President Gloria Arroyo stay as the country’s top official after 2010, according to a June survey of the Social Weather Stations said.
Fifty-five percent also suspect her to be behind the “Cha-cha” (Charter change) effort to extend her term, the survey said.
The survey, fielded over June 19 to 22, 2009, found that opposition to Cha-cha to extend Arroyo’s term increased from 66 percent in February 2009 and 64 percent in October 2008.
Opposition in Metro Manila increased to 83 percent from 72 percent in February 2009, according to SWS. It also rose in the rest of Luzon and the Visayas, but hardly changed in Mindanao.
The survey found 66 percent in Metro Manila, 56 percent in Luzon and 50 percent in the Visayas who “strongly believe” or “somewhat believe” the Arroyo is “behind the current efforts to amend the Constitution in order to extend her term beyond 2010.”
Earlier in the week, the SWS said Arroyo’s net satisfaction rating remained “bad,” hitting -31 in the June survey. She scored -32 in February 2009 and slightly better, -24, in December 2008.
The SWS said whle dissatisfaction with Arroyo lessened in Mindanao and the Visayas, it increased in Luzon.
