SEN. Alan Cayetano’s wife Lani, representative of Taguig-Pateros (1st district), was finally proclaimed as Taguig mayor at about 5 p.m. today. But the proclamation at City Hall was marred by a tear gas incident.
“We were greeting everyone after Lani’s proclamation and talking about Lani’s desire for peaceful reconciliation, then suddenly we saw smoke and then our faces were stinging. People started running,” Sen. Pia Cayetano, sister-in-law of the newly proclaimed mayor, said in a text message.
Sen. Pia Cayeteno said she was with her children and brothers.
Sen. Alan Cayetano said no one was seriously hurt.
Cayetano got 95,865 while her opponent, former Supreme Court Justice Dante Tinga, got 93,445, representing 98 percent of the votes cast.
