BANGUED, Abra.—Police were busy on the eve of elections in Lagangilang in Abra, with tensions heightening as election day drew near.

Around 9 p.m. on May 9, a certain Marlon Castro, a 42-year-old resident of Pacac, Dolores was arrested for illegal possession of a caliber .45 pistol and an M-16 rifle. He is believed to be a member of a private army member of one of the candidates in Dolores.

At about 9:30 p.m. Mayor Lizardo Sinogo  of Lagangilang town complained that he and his followers were allegedly ambushed by the group of mayoral candidate Patrocinio Abaya at Sitio Barbarit, Lagangilang, resulting in the wounding of two of his men.

Abaya claims it was Sinogo who attacked his residence so he was merely defending himself.
