VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Posts about P90k salary at BIR for high school, college graduates MISLEAD

Misleading

Two Facebook (FB) posts falsely insinuated that high school and college graduates can apply at the Bureau of Internal Revenue and earn as much as P90,078.

“NOW HIRING 739 NEW APPLICANTS | AT LEAST A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE, COMPLETION OF TWO YEARS IN COLLEGE AND COLLEGE GRADUATES | MONTHLY SALARY UP TO PHP 90,078),” the July 26 post by FB page Philippine Go read.

This is misleading. The BIR has three vacant positions for Chief Revenue Officer IV offering a P90,078 salary. Only persons with four years of management experience, as well as a masters degree or a certificate of management from the Civil Service Commission (CSC), are eligible to apply for the position.

Philippine Go’s post appeared a day after the BIR released a list containing a total of 739 vacant positions. The erroneous FB post, which carried links to another website (opportunitiesph.com), misled people by using the agency’s official logo in its graphic.

“The BIR clarifies and denounces misleading job postings that had been circulating in various social media platforms, particularly Facebook and TikTok,” a July 28 press release of the Presidential Communications Office read.

Of the 739 vacant positions, the CSC’s website shows a total of 127 job postings that would close by Aug. 12-14.

The FB post claimed that high school graduates can earn as much as P27,000 monthly as administrative assistants. This is inaccurate.

BIR opened 15 vacancies for Senior Administrative Assistant 1 with a salary of P31,320, which closed on Aug. 4. High school graduates “with relevant vocational/trade courses” and graduates of two-year college courses — with three years of relevant experience and 16 hours of training — were allowed to apply.

The agency also opened three positions for Accountant IV with a salary of P71,511. Commerce and business administration graduates who majored in accounting, with three years of relevant experience and 16 hours of training, were eligible for the post that also closed applications on Aug. 4.

Philippine Go’s (created on Dec. 4, 2019) post got 3,515 interactions. Another FB page, Job Opportunities PH (created on Dec. 22, 2019), reshared the post and garnered a total of 299 interactions.
