Multiple Facebook (FB) posts claim that American cable television channel Cartoon Network has shut down. This is not true. The company has denied they are ceasing operations.
Uploaded last July 10, the posts bore a collage of cartoon characters created by the network along with this caption:
“Cartoon Network has officially shut down. Thank you for making our Childhood awesome.”
In a statement that same day, Cartoon Network denied that they are closing down:
“Cartoon Network would like to clarify that there is no truth to the speculation that the network or the studio is shutting down. With a number of recently announced greenlights, we remain committed to continually investing in innovative content that entertains and inspires our viewers across the globe.”
Rumors about the company’s shutdown began spreading on July 9 after an X account called Animation Workers Ignited posted a short video which had a caption that read: “Cartoon Network is dead?!?!”
The same account later clarified that the network, which was behind popular animated shows such as “Powerpuff Girls,” “Adventure Time” and “Ben 10,” remains operational but internal issues in the company have led to animators losing jobs:
“Cartoon Network still exists as a brand and channel. Outsourcing and corporate mergers have led to less jobs for animation workers.”
In August 2023, Cartoon Network closed its animation studio in Burbank, California following a merger with Warner Bros., according to its former general manager Brian Miller. The company has since transferred to a new building with other Warner Bros. subsidiaries.
Uploaded by FB pages Talksh8t, Quezon Province News and Updates and Sweet Qoobee, the post has received over 11,600 reactions, 3,800 shares and 320 comments.
Deccan Chronicle, an India-based fact-checking organization, earlier debunked this claim but it continues to circulate online.
