A Facebook page is circulating an alarmist post claiming that Taal Volcano recently erupted and caused a massive tsunami. This is fake.
Posted on June 9, the post featured an unrealistic image showing a volcanic eruption and a tsunami occurring at the same time. Its caption partly read:
“BREAKING NEWS – Cataclysmic Dual Disaster Strikes Taal Volcano, Philippines
Taal Volcano, Luzon Island – June 9, 2025
In an unprecedented convergence of natural disasters, a massive tsunami towered into the sky as Taal Volcano erupted violently today, creating one of the most visually terrifying and destructive scenes in Philippine history.”
The page also claimed that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) had raised Alert Level 5, the highest warning for a major eruption. It further alleged that over 80,000 residents across Batangas province were evacuated due to shockwaves and flooding.
There are no official reports from PHIVOLCS confirming any violent eruption on that date.
In its observation summary, PHIVOLCS reported that Taal Volcano remained under Alert Level 1 from 12:00 AM on June 9 to 12:00 AM on June 10, indicating a “moderate level of seismic activity with some felt events.” This means steam-driven eruptions and sudden gas emissions may occur and affect areas within the volcano, but there are no indications of an imminent major eruption.
Several of the comments on the post also belied any catastrophic occurrence on that day.
The last recorded significant activity was a minor phreatic blast on May 29 at the main crater of Taal Volcano Island, which produced a 1,500-meter white plume and prompted the agency to raise Alert Level 1.
