Farewell honors for a departed president

BY the time former President Corazon Aquino’s remains arrived at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque last night, the rain had stopped, the ground was dry, and a hazy moon had risen in the sky.

The honor guard had been waiting for hours beside the caisson that was to take her to her final resting place. The Philippine Navy band had practiced and was in formation.  Marshalls composed of policemen and seminarians had positioned themselves at key locations and served as cordons to ensure a crowd-free journey from the bridge inside the Park toward the Aquino mausoleum.

The crowd was not supposed to go beyond this bridge but they would not be restrained.  The marshalls had to be repositioned, but they could not control people who had walked and waited for hours to witness the historic event, even if some of them had to settle for watching Mrs. Aquino’s interment on giant video screen scattered all over Manila Memorial Park.  Luz Rimban was at the Manila Memorial Park.
