VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Post on 10-year-old Sharon Cuneta interview with Imelda Marcos MISLEADING

Misleading

A statement made 10 years ago by singer-actress Sharon Cuneta about former first lady Imelda Marcos was revived and twisted to make it look like she is supporting the Marcos family in this year’s elections.

It was taken from a televised 2012 interview by Cuneta, whose husband, opposition Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, is running for vice president.

The video, posted on March 23 by Facebook (FB) page LOLO KUNG ADIK 2.0, carried this text: “Husgahan nyo man at ibaba ang Family Marcos (Even if you judge and take down the Marcoses) | God will put them up.”

This is not a faithful representation of a statement the actress made in a July 2, 2021 episode of TV5 talk show SHARON – Kasama Mo, Kapatid where she said: “Sabihin man nila ang anuman ang nais nilang sabihin sa mga Marcos lalo na kay ginang Imelda, isa lang po talaga ang nakakaalam ng totoo: ang Panginoong Diyos.”

(Let them say whatever they want to say about the Marcoses, especially Mrs. Imelda, but only the Lord God knows the truth.)

Thinking it is a recent interview, netizens mocked Cuneta for being “plastik” (insincere) and an “amnesiac,” and took it like the actress was defending the Marcos family whose corruption cases continue to hound former senator and presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos.

A user of VERA Files’ Viber tipline asked to verify this claim.

Throughout the interview, the Megastar — as Cuneta is called — referred to Mrs Marcos as “ninang(godmother) because former president Ferdinand Marcos was a principal sponsor at her 1984 wedding to ex-husband Gabby Concepcion.

Cuneta has openly supported Pangilinan in campaign rallies and related events. She has not made any recent statement promoting any member of the Marcos family.

The misleading video garnered 3.92 million interactions. It appeared just as Cuneta shared an Instagram post and a Twitter thread about senatorial candidate Salvador Panelo’s use of her song “Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas.”

LOLO KUNG ADIK 2.0 (created in November 2021) expresses support for President Rodrigo Duterte in its About page. It uses a profile picture with the names of presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and running mate Sara Duterte.
