Commission on Elections chair George Erwin Garcia declared the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, “generally peaceful and orderly” at the close of the voting – 3 p.m. of Oct. 30 despite incidents of violence that resulted in the death of three persons.

Monday’s polls, the result of which, according to Pres. Ferdinand Marcos  is “crucial” to national politicians, was the first since 2018.

Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE), a non-partisan group of volunteers dedicated to honest and credible elections, underscored the importance of the Oct. 30 elections: “Barangay and SK leaders are the architects of local communities, responsible for the delivery of vital services and in shaping the very foundation upon which our democracy stands. Its impact, therefore, extends far beyond the grassroots.”
