THE Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) filed a P73.85-million tax evasion complaint against Ang Galing Pinoy party-list Rep. Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo and his wife Angela Thursday.
BIR Commissioner Kim Henares said the couple violated Section 254 and Section 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code.
Section 254 pertains to “the attempt to evade or defeat tax”, while Section 255 pertains to “failure to File Return, Supply Correct and Accurate Information, Pay Tax Withhold and Remit Tax and Refund Excess Taxes Withheld on Compensation.”
“Today we’re filing two cases, 37th and 38th case. The 37th case is a tax evasion case against spouses Juan Miguel M. Arroyo also known as Mikey Arroyo and his wife Ma. Angela M. Arroyo for violation of sections 254 and 255 of the Tax Code,” said Henares during a press conference at the Department of Justice in Manila.
Henares said that the case against the couple was based on the bureau’s investigation of Mikey’s Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net worth (SALN).
“Based on our investigation, Mikey Arroyo did not file his income tax returns for taxable years 2005, 2008, and 2009,” said Henares.
In an interview with InterAksyon, a BIR officer who refused to be identified, said Arroyo had failed to pay taxes for his properties in La Vista Subdvision, Quezon City; Pampanga; and one house in San Mateo County, California since 2009.
“We have a strong case against them,” the BIR official said.
In 2009, VERA Files reported that the former presidential son failed to declare in his Statement of Assets and Liabilities (SALN) a $1.32-million beachfront property located at 1655 Beach Park Blvd in Foster City in San Mateo County in San Francisco, California.
The house was up for sale but did not appear in Arroyo’s 2007 and 2008 SALNs.
