Filipino Muslims gather at Manila’s Rizal Park for an early morning prayer in celebration of Eid al-Adha or Feast of the Sacrifice June 16.

Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha to commemorate the sacrifice of Abraham of his son, Ishmael, as an act of obedience to God.  Modern day rites call for the slaughter of lambs, cows and goats as a “sacrifice” with the meat being distributed to the poor.

Marked on the 10th day of the twelfth and final month of Dhu al-Hijja in the Islamic calendar, this year’s festival coincided with Father’s Day observed worldwide.
