A Facebook user claimed that International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan has resigned from his position. This is misleading.

Khan only took a temporary leave of absence amid the probe into allegations of sexual misconduct against him. He did not leave his post permanently.

Published on May 19, the reel featured a news report from Citizen TV Kenya edited with text that reads,

“ICC Prosecutor resigns” and “GOODBYE ICC”

Erroneously linking former president Rodrigo Duterte to this development, the user captioned the post,

si tatay lang talaga mkapabagsak sa icc.

(Father is really the only one who can bring the ICC down.)

ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan is on temporary leave, contrary to a misleading claim that he resigned.

In a May 19 statement, the Court said that Khan will be on leave until the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services completes its probe into his purported sexual misconduct. This is clearly stated in the news report.

Reports quoted a letter Khan sent to his colleagues in which he said, “My decision is driven by deep and unwavering commitment to the credibility of our office and the court, and to safeguard the integrity of the process and fairness to all involved.”

The ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor said the work “across all situations and cases globally” will continue as ICC deputy prosecutors took over Khan’s position for the meantime.

Facebook user Myway Vlog (created Jan. 9, 2024) has 91,000 followers. The misleading post garnered 11,000 views and over 300 reactions as of writing.
