Editor’s Note: This fact check was originally published on election day, May 12, 2025. Marcy Teodoro’s proclamation as Marikina Representative has been suspended by the Comelec pending the resolution of his disqualification case.
A post on Facebook (FB) claimed that Marikina Mayor Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro was disqualified to run for congressman. This is not true.
On May 11, a day before the midterm polls, an FB page published the false claim. The post’s caption read:
“CONFIRMED: Tanggal na si Marcy Teodoro sa halalan! Hindi na siya pwedeng iboto — disqualified, may kaso, at wala nang saysay ang boto sa kanya
(Marcy Teodoro was removed from the elections! You cannot vote for him anymore – he has been disqualified, faces a case, and any vote for him will become useless).”
The spurious post copied the style of ABS-CBN News’ graphic cards to make it look like the information is legitimate.
While the Commission on Elections (Comelec) First Division granted a petition to cancel Teodoro’s certificate of candidacy, there has yet to be a final and executory decision on the matter.
In December 2024, the Comelec’s First Division ruled that Teodoro was ineligible to run for the position because he was unable to prove that he successfully changed his residential address from the second district to the first district of Marikina.
Congressional candidates are required by law to be residents of the districts they intend to represent for at least a year before election day.
Teodoro’s camp also said the circulating claim is not true, following reports of an arrest of a person who was allegedly distributing fake tabloids spreading the fabricated claim.
“This is all fake news. Congressman Marcy Teodoro is still a candidate. Let us end the lies. Go out and vote today,” his wife Maan Teodoro said in Filipino.
There has also been no announcements about this on the official FB page of the Comelec. However, a day after the elections, the polling body suspended the proclamation of wins of various candidates – including Teodoro.FB page ORAS NA, Online NA (created on Oct. 23, 2017) published the post, garnering over 600 reactions, 170 comments and 190 shares.
