A YouTube video suggests that the Senate cited Vice Ganda in contempt after she joked about Sen. Rodante Marcoleta at her concert earlier this month. This is false.
No such order came from the Senate. Vice Ganda has not been invited to attend nor was her name explicitly mentioned at a Senate committee hearing on online gambling platforms last Aug. 14.
Uploaded on Aug. 17, the video’s headline read:
“KAKAPASOK LANG! C0NTEMPT sa HEARING ng SENADO? MARCOLETA T1NAP0S si VICE GANDA BILIS ng KAR MA?”
(Just in! Contempt in the Senate hearing? Marcoleta ended Vice Ganda, karma is so fast?)
There was no motion from any senator to cite Vice Ganda in contempt, nor was she invited to a committee hearing in the first place.
Under Senate rules, a committee chairman with the concurrence of one senator may cite a resource person in contempt for testifying falsely or refusing to follow the committee’s orders during a legislative inquiry. An individual cited in contempt will be detained in the Senate under the custody of the sergeant-at-arms.
During the Aug. 14 committee hearing, Marcoleta, without naming names, expressed his ire toward a certain comedian for making fun of his physical appearance in a recent concert sponsored by an online gaming platform. He said:
“Pati po ako ay kanyang idinawit. Bigla ba naman niyang sinabi, ‘Tignan niyo yung mukha ni Marcoleta kung matatawa kayo. Napaka walang hiya noong tao na ‘yon. Ayaw ko na lang siyang patusin.“
(She dragged me into it as well. She suddenly said, “Look at Marcoleta’s face and let’s see if you will laugh.” That person is so shameless. I don’t even want to bother dealing with her anymore.)
A clip of Vice Ganda joking about Marcoleta’s appearance surfaced after her two-night “Super Divas” concert with singer Regine Velasquez on Aug. 8 and 9.
