FACT CHECK: Old video from Argentina, NOT pro-Duterte ‘people power’ in Manila

A video posted on Facebook (FB) is claiming that the streets around Recto Avenue in Manila were crowded with people participating in a supposed people power movement. This is false.

Uploaded on March 12, the malicious video carried text and a caption that read:

“Recto manila right now. People power 2. Parang mga bubuyog sa dami Ng tao”

There was no recent massive gathering of people around Recto, Manila in support of former president Rodrigo Duterte. The video is old footage taken in Argentina on Dec. 21, 2022 after the country won the FIFA World Cup 2022.

A reverse image search reveals that the video is old footage taken on Dec. 21, 2022 in Argentina, after its national team won the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

The video, originally posted on X (formerly Twitter) was also re-uploaded on the same day by the official YouTube channel of ESPN FC, the football channel of the sports media outlet. The caption of the video read:

“4 MILLION people in the streets of Argentina. (via facundodelreal/TW)”

The erroneous video surfaced a day after former president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on March 11, on a warrant from the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity committed during his administration’s drug war.

Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque earlier called on Duterte’s supporters to gather on Edsa for a people power movement to protest the former president’s arrest.

The false FB video has garnered 527,000 views, 5,400 shares, and 2,400 likes as of writing.
