A Facebook post showed a photo of Vice President Sara Duterte looking over a coffin, implying to readers that former President Rodrigo Duterte died while in the custody of the International Criminal Court. This is false.
On July 11, the post was published by an FB page and continues to circulate this week. It bore the following caption:
“SARA DUTERTE, HINDI MATANGGAP ANG NANGYARI KAY RODRIGO DUTERTE — EMOSYONAL NA PAGSABOG, IKINAGULAT NG BUONG BAYAN! ‘Hindi ito ang nararapat sa kanya…’ (Sara Duterte cannot accept what happened to Rodrigo Duterte – her emotional outburst shocked the country. ‘He does not deserve this…’)
Sara breaks down over her father’s fate — public stunned as the Vice President expresses raw, unfiltered emotion about former President Duterte.”
This was the caption of the photo of the vice president while looking solemn as she stood beside a coffin draped with a Philippine flag.
This is not true and a clickbait. Duterte is not dead. The photo of the vice president was given a false context.
The photo of Duterte-Carpio was published on her official FB page in February last year, when she visited Lanao del Norte to pay respects to the fallen soldiers who died during a conflict in the area.
The click-bait FB post emerged after the vice president shared personal observations of her father with the media on July 14, noting that he lost a lot of weight since he was held at the ICC detention unit.
Despite the weight loss, she noted that her father’s facial features still do not have wrinkles or sagging skin. “Glowing pero payat,” she jokingly said to the press.
“Hindi ko po alam kung maglalabas ang ICC ng health bulletin. Pwede nating itanong sa lawyer kung pwedeng i-request ‘yan sa registry ng ICC,” Duterte said.
FB page Magsasaka, Mabuhay Ka (created on July 18, 2017) published the post, garnering over 620 reactions, 730 comments and 30 shares. The publisher of the false post also circulated the emotionally-provocative claim to their website and YouTube channel.
