PROTESTING the continuing poverty under the Aquino administration, militants yesterday marched to the United States Embassy in Manila to perform their own modern version of a “senakulo.”

Senakulo or Lenten passion play depicts the life and suffering of Christ. Members of the militant umbrella organization Bagong Alyansa Makabayan (Bayan) re-enacted the passion of Christ by portraying the “daily crosses of poor Filipino families.”

“For the longest time, our Filipino workers were like Jesus Christ as he carries His cross to the Calvary due to the cheap and docile labor state in the Philippines,” the group said in a statement.

Reciting responsorial psalms and prayers for the poor, the group called on the Aquino government to address the high prices of fuel, food, and basic services.

Bayan also decried the ongoing US-RP Balikatan military exercises and the Oplan Bayanihan, the government’s new counter-insurgency program.

The group will be continuing the Lenten-themed protest tomorrow, April 20, at St. Anthony Church in Bustillos, Manila.
