Undersecretary Lorraine T. Badoy’s Feb. 5 statement on fact checkers reveals her misunderstanding of our role in the fight against disinformation. It is sad and unfortunate given her important position in the government.
Fact checkers debunk falsehoods and wrong information that are spread online with verified facts. In short, we counter lies with truth.
Fact checking empowers the public with accurate information for use as basis or guide in their decision-making. As we all know, a well-informed citizenry makes for a vibrant democracy.
