VERA FILES FACT CHECK: FB reel shows impact of different typhoons, NOT Mawar in Guam

False

A reel on Facebook (FB) is showing a couple of clips purportedly featuring the havoc wrought by supertyphoon Mawar in Guam. The short video actually shows the impact of past typhoons in Puerto Rico and Japan.

On May 26, a Filipino FB netizen published the video with the following text superimposed on the short video: “MAWAR SUPER TYPHOON”.

The 17-second video shows two clips where huge tree branches and vehicles were being swept away by powerful winds while a roaring sound could be heard in the background.

These clips do not show the onslaught of Mawar in Guam, but the destruction brought about by two different storms years ago.

Reverse image search revealed that the first clip shown in the video was taken in Puerto Rico when hurricane Irma made landfall on the island in 2017, while the second video was taken in Japan when typhoon Jebi devastated the country in 2018.

This video appeared after Mawar barrelled into Guam, leaving the island of 172,000 people with no electricity and a lot of cleaning up to do. But there were no casualties reported.

The FB netizen’s reel has since garnered over 13,100 reactions, 950 comments, 8,100 shares and one million views.
