Amid the heavy rains caused by Typhoon Emong (international name: Co-may) in several parts of Luzon, a now-deleted Facebook post showed a video of a landslide, implying it happened recently in Baguio, Benguet. This is false. The clip was taken in Kalinga in October 2024.

Published on July 24, the video carried the caption that read:

Benguet baguio landslide

Underway at the mosimos tomiangan road in tabuk city kalinga.

At least three other FB users republished the clip on July 25 using similar captions, with one post specifically mentioning Typhoon Emong in its hashtags.

A Facebook post showed a video of a landslide, implying it happened recently in Baguio, Benguet. This is false.

The oldest copy of the original video that VERA Files has tracked through reverse image search was posted by two users on FB and Instagram on Oct. 24, 2024.

In the caption of the original video, the users wrote: “ATM LANDSLIDE USOK TOMIANGAN ctto.” The location mentioned in the post is Sitio Tomiangan in Tabuk City, Kalinga.

The official FB page of the Provincial Information Office of Kalinga also published a screenshot of the landslide from the original clip on Oct. 24, 2024, further confirming it occurred at the section of road in Tomiangan, Tabuk City.

According to an Oct. 26, 2024 report by the GMA news program State of the Nation, which featured the original video, massive rocks crashed down from the mountain slope in Kalinga during Typhoon Kristine last year.

While the 2024 video was erroneously passed off as a recent incident, there have been reports of actual landslides in Baguio City and other areas of Benguet province due to Typhoon Emong.

The false video surfaced on the same day that Typhoon Emong made landfall in Agno, Pangasinan, on July 24.

Posted by FB user Maui Villanueva Llobrera (created on Jan. 9, 2025), the now-defunct FB reel was viewed over 6.6 million times and has garnered 40,100 reactions, 3,800 comments, and 13,000 shares. The videos republished by the other three FB users have collectively received 43,643 interactions as of writing.
