Posts on YouTube and Facebook claim that the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) had testified on the accounts of Vice President Sara Duterte. This is false.

Published just hours apart on April 26, the quote card featuring the logo of BPI bore the text:

“BPI kumanta na! Tumistigo na sa bank account ni VP Sara! (BPI confessed! They testified on VP Sara’s bank account).”

It was AMLC, not BPI, that revealed suspicious transactions in the bank accounts of VP Sara Duterte during the April 22 impeachment hearing of the House Committee on Justice.

It was the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) that revealed during a House Committee on Justice clarificatory hearing on impeachment complaints against Duterte that it had received reports of suspicious bank transactions linked to the vice president and her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio, amounting to P6.77 billion.

Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro, committee chair, clarified during the April 22 hearing that the subpoena issued to the AMLC covered only reports on unjustified financial activities, transactions exceeding P500,000 and those that do not match the financial capacity of the account holders, among others.

There are no news reports of BPI discussing or testifying on the vice president’s bank accounts.

The graphic on the post featured a collage of photos of purported BPI officials, their faces blurred, Duterte, Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla, Luistro, and former presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo.

Inset photos of President Ferdinand Marcos and former senator Antonio Trillanes IV also appear on the right side of the graphic. Both photos show telltale signs of AI generation as evidenced by their symmetrically aligned tear streaks and smooth skin.

The dubious posts circulated days after the AMLC appeared in Duterte’s impeachment hearings.
