YouTube videos claimed that Philippine boxer Nesthy Petecio won a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics. This is not true. Petecio won a bronze medal in the women’s 57kg boxing at this year’s summer Olympics.

One was uploaded on Aug. 2 with this headline:

“Gold for Philippines Nesthy Petecio winning moment at Paris Olympics.”

Another video posted six days later bore this head:

WOW! Nesthy Petecio 3RD GOLD MEDALIST ng PILIPINAS sa PARIS OLYMPICS 2024 (Nesthy Petecio, third gold medalist of the Philippines in Paris Olympics 2024)!? Congratulations.”

The photos and clips used in the videos do not show Petecio winning a gold medal in this year’s Olympics but her victory in earlier pre-qualifying matches.

Petecio bowed out of the gold medal contention for the women’s featherweight division in the Paris Olympics after losing to Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in their semifinal match last Aug. 8 (Manila Time).

VERA FILES FACT CHECK: THE FACTS. Nesthy Petecio did not win a gold medal in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The boxer settled for a bronze after losing to her Turkish opponent in the semifinal match in the featherweight division.

The two-time Olympic medalist settled for bronze, securing the Philippines’ fourth medal in this year’s games. Petecio won a silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The clip used in the first video shows her winning against Turkish boxer Esra Yildiz Kahraman during the World Qualification Tournament for the Olympics last March 12.

Meanwhile, the photos featured in the second video were taken from Petecio’s fights against France and China during the Olympic featherweight division’s round of 16 and quarterfinals.

VERA Files Fact Check has debunked disinformation about Filipino athletes in the Paris Summer Games (Read: Video DOES NOT show Carlos Yulo’s performance and Elreen Ando is NOT PH’s first gold medalist in 2024 Olympics).

Uploaded by YouTube channels Olympics Back2Back and TALKS TV, the erroneous videos collectively received 41,337 interactions.
