A Filipino Facebook user shared a video claiming to show footage of a supposed earthquake in India. This is false.

The original footage was taken during the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015, not India.

Uploaded on July 10, the post featured CCTV footage showing people suddenly running in panic as buildings began to shake during an earthquake. The video included an overlaid text and a caption that read:

“Earthquake caught on CCTV in India”

A false video circulating online claims to show an earthquake caught on CCTV, allegedly recorded in India. The original footage was taken in Nepal.

A reverse image search using Google reveals that the video was first uploaded by the Nepalese television channel Kantipur TV HD on YouTube on May 24, 2015, more than a month after a devastating earthquake hit Nepal and its neighboring countries.

The timestamp of the original video, which was concealed in the misleading post, shows that the CCTV footage was recorded at 11:56 Nepal Standard Time on Saturday, Apr. 25, 2015. The title of the original post was: “CCTV footage of ASON Dabali during Earthquake on 25 April 2015”.

WildFilmsIndia, a stock footage agency, also posted the same video on its YouTube channel with the title: “Ason Dabali in Kathmandu during Earthquake of 25 April 2015: CCTV footage.”

“One of the most devastating earthquakes had shaken Nepal. The magnitude of this trembler was a massive 7.8 on the Richter scale,” the description box of the video read.

The incorrect post appeared after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake jolted the areas of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram in India last July 10. No damage has been reported across the city after the quake, according to an India Today report.

As of writing, the video posted by Facebook user Judith S. Mocorro (created Sept. 16, 2014), has garnered 2.4 million views, 17,000 reactions, 960 shares, and 236 comments.
