FACT CHECK: Trillanes has NO confirmation of VP Sara Duterte’s ICC warrant

WHAT WAS CLAIMED

Sonny Trillanes has confirmed that there is a warrant of arrest against VP Sara Duterte from the International Criminal Court (ICC)

OUR VERDICT

False:

ICC has not issued a warrant of arrest for Sara Duterte nor has Trillanes confirmed. Trillanes has not made any statement about the Dutertes’ political comeback in 2028.

A Facebook post is claiming that ex-senator Antonio Trillanes IV confirmed that vice president Sara Duterte has a warrant of arrest from the International Criminal Court. This is false.

Published on July 14, the FB page’s post carried photos of Trillanes and Duterte side-by-side with the headline:

“ICC may issue arrest warrant vs VP Sara: Trillanes”

The caption read:

“MERON NG ICC WARRANT”

TIGNAN: ayun sa imahinasyon ni Trillanes ano mang oras ay posibling mag issue na rin ng arrest warrant laban kay VP Sara at sa iba pang Duterte allies nito. Saad pa nya na kailangan wala ng makakabalik na mga Duterte sa 2028 para hindi na bumalik ang EJK.”

(THERE IS AN ICC WARRANT. LOOK: According to Trillanes’ imagination, it is possible that an arrest warrant will be issued for VP Sara and other Duterte allies.

He even said that the Dutertes must not be able to return [to the country] in 2028 so that EJK will also not return.)

There is no confirmation from the International Criminal Court that it has issued a warrant of arrest against Vice President Sara Duterte. Former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV did not claim that such a warrant exists.

Only former president Rodrigo Duterte was issued an arrest warrant by the ICC on March 11. The ICC has not issued a warrant of arrest against Sara Duterte.

Trillanes did not say that the ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Vice President Duterte. He, however, noted that it’s a distinct possibility.

In a phone interview with One News’ Storycon on May 2, 2024, the former senator said that it is highly possible that the vice president is included in the next batches of ICC warrants. Trillanes is one of the many complainants in the case against the former president before the ICC.
