VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Decade-old clips used in ‘2023’ video of India flooding

False

A Facebook video supposedly showing fatal landslides and floods this year in India is making the rounds among Filipinos amid the current wet season. The clips shown were from 10 years ago.

Uploaded on July 18, the 35-second video spliced together four clips of multi-story buildings collapsing into a raging river in India. It bore the caption:

“Himachal Pradesh flood landslide – India – 2023 #Flood_In_India #Flood2023 #Floods_video….”

While northern India experienced landslides and flash floods caused by torrential rains this July, the clips show the damage caused by a similar event in the region in 2013.

The uploader published mirrored versions of the original clips.

The first and second clips show a house swept away by the overflowing River Ganges in Uttarakhand state in June 2013. Through reverse image search, VERA Files Fact Check tracked down footage of the same event taken from other angles.

The clip of houses on a cliff also shows Uttarakhand in June 2013.  Videos broadcasted by news organizations on June 18, 2013 show the same buildings on the left close to plunging into the Ganges river.

The video ended with a clip of another building crashing into the same river in 2013.

Northern India’s Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh states faced heavy flooding and landslides caused by early monsoon rains ten years ago.

The currently circulating video was posted a week after northern India was again hit by floods caused by torrential rains, killing at least 41 people.

Filipino netizens interacted with the video amid the aftermath of tropical depression Dodong and the onslaught of Super Typhoon Egay this July.

VERA Files Fact Check has debunked other videos falsely passing off old clips as recent disasters’ effects. (Read FB reel shows impact of different typhoons, NOT Mawar in Guam)

The video uploaded by the FB page TODAY (created on July 5, 2022) has 1,900 reactions, 117 comments, 562 shares and 83,000 views as of writing.
