MALABON City—While evacuees in other parts of Metro Manila have gotten quick attention and assistance, residents of flooded areas in this city say they have been trapped in evacuation centers with little food, clean water, and aid from rescue and relief organizations.
EVACUEES who escaped rising floodwaters in Marikina began returning to their homes on Thursday, although many still remain in evacuation centers.
AFTER being pounded by intense rain for the past several days, the southwest monsoon eased up slightly Wednesday morning to reveal the garbage hiding in Metro Manila’s underbelly.
THE rains turned the whole metropolis into a virtual waterworld, but signs of Filipinos’ tough and resilient nature emerged in images of surreal humor and even joy amid the disaster brought about by the southwest monsoon or habagat.
SOME 5,000 families or 35,378 individuals have sought shelter in 29 evacuation centers in Marikina, amid the continued swelling of the Marikina River and heavy rains that caused floods in various parts of the city.
PLACED on red alert by weather and disaster officials since Monday night, Metro Manila turned into a “waterworld” on Tuesday as the southwest monsoon unleashed torrential rains nearly nonstop. A record rainfall of 10 to 30 mm per hour was recorded in the metropolis.
A non-stop downpour in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces has caused Metro Manila’s river network to overflow, submerging communities like this one in Barangay Roxas in Quezon City.
