THE impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona has put the spotlight on an otherwise nondescript document that all government officials routinely file annually: the statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN). Supreme Court decisions show that violations relating to improper filing of a SALN, including what some may consider minor, have been meted out severe penalties.

AS I was writing this piece, Supreme Court Spokesman Midas Marquez was having a press conference announcing the Temporary Restraining Order that the High Court issued against the Senate, seating as an impeachment court, to subpoena information on the foreign dollar account of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

PSBANK President Pascual Garcia III submitted to the Senate on Wednesday certifications showing deposits in three bank accounts of impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona that apparently were not fully disclosed in his Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.
