Editor’s Note: This fact check was originally published on election day, May 12, 2025. The Bayan Muna Party-list failed to win a seat in the House of Representatives.
A day before the country held its midterm elections, several Facebook (FB) posts circulated fake documents about the “disqualification” of Bayan Muna Party-List. This is false.
A number of Pages and FB users spread the claim on May 11. One of the posts read:
“The COMELEC has disqualified the BAYAN MUNA Party-list from participating in the 2025 midterm elections.”
The posts also carried an alleged press statement from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) stating that Bayan Muna was removed from the ballot for “directly supporting” and “involvement” in terrorist activities.
This is not true. The Commission said any document bearing this claim is fake.
“The press statement that allegedly came from the Office of the Comelec Spokesperson about the disqualification of the Bayan Muna Party-list on the May 12, 2025 National and Local Elections is fake news,” the Comelec said in Filipino in a May 10 FB post.
The poll body further said the Comelec en banc has not released any such resolution, adding that Bayan Muna still remains in the official ballot.
The Commission warned that spreading false and alarming information is considered an electoral offense.
One FB user that spread the fake claim received 46 interactions, 21 comments, and 14 shares, while another got 69 interactions, 49 comments, and 125 shares.
