A YouTube video claims that Sen. Imee Marcos has resigned from office. This is not true. Neither is there a pronouncement, expressed or implied intent to do so. The president’s elder sister remains part of the 24-member Senate.
Uploaded on May 28, the video bore the clickbait headline:
“OMG: Grabe KINARMA na! IMEE GUMAWA ng INGAY NAG-RESÍGN na/ PALASYO PUGAD ng KAWÀTÀN KUMPERMADO PBBM
(OMG: Oh no this is karma! Imee made noise, resigned already/Palace is a den of thieves, confirmed PBBM).”
Its thumbnail also carried a text that read: “KINARMA ANG PAMILYA. KAPATID NAG-RESIGN NA. IMEE GRABE ANG PASABOG BINASAG ANG PINUNO (The family suffered karma. Sibling already resigned! Imee had an extreme surprise, crushed the leader).”
There has been no announcement from the Senate or Imee’s office that she resigned from office while both houses of Congress are currently on break. She remains a member of the Senate and was even appointed on May 23 as a member of the Senate Electoral Tribunal.
Lawmakers recently adjourned sine die the second regular session of the 19th Congress. The Senate and House of Representatives will resume sessions on July 22, in time for the president’s State of the Nation Address.
The video did not show any proof to support its claim but merely played an audio clip from a previously fact-checked vlogger who criticized Sen. Marcos for supposedly being silent amid the ongoing feud between former president Rodrigo Duterte and her brother, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The video emerged days after Imee refuted her brother’s claim that nothing was done under the past administrations of Benigno Aquino III and Duterte to rehabilitate the areas devastated by Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.
