A viral video on Facebook with a group of people protesting at The Hague in The Netherlands is misleading people into believing it is related to former president Rodrigo Duterte’s trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC). This needs context.

On Sept. 21, an FB page published the spurious video. The following text is superimposed throughout its short seven-second run:

“Balita ngayun (sic) sa Netherlands. Kung sa Pilipinas may rally, meron din dito sa The Hague malapit sa ICC kay PRRD (News now in the Netherlands. If there are rallies in the Philippines, there are also protests at The Hague near ICC where Duterte is).”

With the vague wording, viewers believed the protesters clashing with the police in the video were supporters of the former president. “Magulo talaga ang mga DDS (Duterte supporters are really so chaotic),” one commenter said.

A reverse image search revealed the full context of the video.

The rally at The Hague is unrelated to former president Rodrigo Duterte’s ongoing case at the International Criminal Court. The video showed an anti-immigrant protest that people held there.

The original video was published on Twitter on Sept. 20 by a user named BobHGL with the caption in English: “At #Elsfest on the #Malieveld.”

A report from The Netherlands containing the video said that it was taken during an anti-immigrant protest in The Hague dubbed as “Elsfest” where local state authorities clashed with protesters.

In the Philippines, the video surfaced after Duterte was charged with three counts of murder for his alleged role in the killing of victims of his administration’s anti-drug campaign.

FB page ilonggo tiktok (created on Sept. 20, 2020) published the video, garnering over 81,000 reactions, 7,700 comments, 7,100 shares and 10.8 million views.
