VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Cavite listed as one of the worst provinces to live in a SATIRE

Satire

A satirical Facebook (FB) page posted a graphic claiming that Cavite has been listed as one of the ten worst provinces to live in, drawing many reactions from netizens who believed it to be true.

Posted on Sept. 8 by FB page News4, the graphic’s headline read: “CAVITE, NAKASAMA SA LISTAHAN NG (included in the list of) ‘WORLD’S WORST PROVINCES TO LIVE IN’.”

It further claimed that Cavite was listed among the world’s worst provinces after 10,000 cases of riots, killings, theft, and disorder were recorded in one day. President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos was allegedly proud of the world record.

News4 (created on Oct. 16, 2021) is a parody of News5, TV5’s news organization. It classifies itself as a satire/parody page. All of its content carries a small “satire only” disclaimer.

Some netizens did point out that the content and the page were satirical and a few laughed at the joke. But there were many who believed the satire post, and also used it to mock Cavite native Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla. It also triggered reactions from Caviteños in defense of their hometown.

The month-old satirical post first appeared after arrests were made in the municipality of Tanza and General Trias City, Cavite. But it resurfaced after Remulla hogged the headlines following the arrest of his son in Las Piñas City on Oct. 11 for alleged importation of dangerous drugs.

The post garnered some 5,000 reactions, 544 comments, and was shared over 3,100 times.
