In February 1986, Filipinos discovered the capacity for greatness in them and came together to oust a dictator, Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
The world witnessed in awe millions of Filipinos gather along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) to protect then Police Chief Fidel Ramos and Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile and the military rebels who led the coup d’état against Marcos until he and his family were forced to flee on Feb. 25, 1986. Corazon Aquino, widow of the assassinated opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., was elected president and presided over the restoration of democracy in the country.
Forty years have passed. There were times when the EDSA spirit seemed to have waned. But the celebration on Wednesday showed the desire for freedom and democracy is deep and strong among us. The presence of the Gen Zs – young people in their 20s – demanding transparency and accountability in governance, gives us reason to look forward to a brighter future.
