VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Gadon falsely claims that human rights violations under Marcos Sr. regime were mere propaganda of ‘yellows’

WHAT WAS CLAIMED

The human rights violations during the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. had been proven to be false and were mere invention and propaganda by the opposition.

OUR VERDICT

False:

The Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission has documented 11,103 Filipinos who suffered abuse under the Marcos regime and eligible to receive compensations from the P10- billion fund from the Marcos Swiss accounts.
In 1995, some 10,000 of these victims of human rights won a class-action lawsuit in Hawaii where a jury found the late dictator guilty of the “torture, murder and disappearances of fellow Filipinos.”

The quote card for this fact check was updated to reflect the role of Human Rights Victims’ Claims Board as an independent quasi-judicial body to receive, evaluate, process and investigate claims of human rights violations during the Marcos dictatorship. On the other hand, the Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission, an independent government agency, was created to establish, restore, preserve and conserve a memorial, museum, library and compendium in honor of the many human rights violations victims during the same period.

(UPDATED) Lawyer Larry Gadon has erroneously claimed that human rights violations during the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. had been proven to be false and were merely invented and used as propaganda by the opposition.
