VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Robredo DID NOT say ‘sunshine after rain is climate change’

A TikTok video wrongly claims former vice president Leni Robredo made a simplistic definition of climate change.

Posted on Sept. 28, the TikTok video shows a quote card supposedly of Robredo describing climate change as merely a change in weather. She was named “Leni ‘Angat’ Robredo” in the graphic, alluding to her Angat Buhay Foundation.

The quote read:

“Pag ang ulan tumila tapos biglang umaraw climate change na iyun. Iyun na ang climate change. Kaya huwag natin gawing biro kung di naman tayo seryoso.”

(When the rain stops pouring then the sun suddenly shines, that’s climate change. That is climate change. So let’s not make fun of it when we are not serious.)

Robredo made no such remark.

She previously gave statements on addressing climate change but did not say the one presented in the video.

The fake quote card was actually a satirical post created by a Twitter user who altered an old Inquirer.net quote card. When reposted on TikTok, it excluded the #satire label from the original tweet.

Several netizens believed the statement to be true, with some leaving sarcastic comments mocking Robredo’s intelligence and asking what she meant.

The video came out two days after a statement of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos on climate change went viral online. (Read VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Video of Marcos questioning climate change NEEDS CONTEXT)

The fabricated quote card shared by TikTok user @miss.triziah06 has 61,100 views, 968 reactions, 696 comments and 354 reposts as of publishing. Facebook page ONLY FACTS (created on Aug. 30, 2016) also shared the quote card garnering 133 reactions, 61 comments and 17 shares.
