Pumanig si Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa China sa panukala nito na magsagawa ng isang magkasanib na imbestigasyon sa insidente noong Hunyo 9 na kinasasangkutan ng isang naka-angklang bangka ng mga mangingisdang Pilipino at isang barkong Tsino sa pinagtatalunang West Philippine Sea.

Bago ang pahayag ng Palasyo, nagbabala si Foreign Affairs Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin laban sa isang magkasanib na imbestigasyon, at sinabing ito ay “manghihimasok” sa “soberanya ng dalawang bansa.”
Gayunpaman, habang hinihintay ang mga resulta ng imbestigasyon, inilarawan na ni Duterte ang insidente, kung saan maaaring nalunod ang 22 mangingisdang Pilipino sa gitna ng dagat, bilang isang “maliit na insidente sa dagat”.
