VERA FILES FACT CHECK: NO confirmation of Bongbong Marcos-Sara Duterte tandem in 2022 polls

Another video with a false claim about former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos allegedly teaming up with Davao City Mayor Sara “Inday” Duterte for the 2022 elections has been shared on social media. Not true.

The video posted by YouTube channel BANAT NEWS TV on Aug. 9 also claimed that Marcos has been officially accepted by the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban). This is misleading because the party only indicated that it is open to taking in Marcos should he decide to join them. Marcos moved from his father’s Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL) party to the Nacionalista Party (NP) when he ran and won as Senator in 2010. He also ran as vice-president under the NP in 2016.

The spurious video had the headline: “JUST IN : FINALLY! BONGBONG MARCOS KINUMPIRMANG si MAYOR SARA ang KA-TANDEM sa 2022 DILAW4N iiYAK na (confirmed Mayor Sara [Duterte] as tandem mate for 2022, Yellows will cry).

Marcos has not announced final plans for next year’s national elections. And in a July 27 interview with DZRH radio host Deo Macalma, the former senator said he has asked the Davao City mayor about her own plans in the 2022 polls but the latter has not made a decision yet.

VERA Files Fact Check has previously debunked similar claims about a Marcos-Duterte tandem. (See VERA FILES FACT CHECK: NO announcement of a Bongbong-Sara tandem in 2022 polls and VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Video claiming Bongbong-Sara tandem for 2022 confirmed NOT TRUE)

BANAT NEWS TV’s 12-minute video used a clip from Marcos’ 40-minute interview with RMN DZXL on Aug. 3, where he denied rumors he did not want Sara Duterte as running mate. He said those were just speculations by certain groups and that he was keeping all his options open.

Meanwhile, a part of an Aug. 7 Bombo Radyo report was used to support the misleading claim that Marcos has joined PDP-Laban. The spurious video emerged a day after media outlets reported that PDP-LABAN’s Acting Secretary General Melvin Matibag said the party was open to having Marcos as a member.

The video got over 204,000 views on YouTube and was embedded in articles on websites NEWS GLOBAL PH and Portal News PH; garnering over 15,000 Facebook interactions and potentially reaching 2.48 million people according to social media monitoring CrowdTangle.
