A social media card with a fabricated “admission” from Vice President Leni Robredo about cheating in the 2016 vice presidential race is making the rounds online using a legitimate news platform.
The fake quote card read: “Opo! Dinaya namin si Bongbong! Kina-usap ako ni Mar at hinimok akong tumakbo bilang VP niya. ‘Ang sabi ko, Hindi ako mananalo. Hindi ako masyadong kilala.’ Ang sabi naman niya, ‘kami ang bahala. Nasa atin ang makinarya.’”
(Translation: Yes! We cheated Bongbong [Marcos]! Mar talked to me and encouraged me to run as his VP. I said, “I won’t win. I’m not well-known.” He said, “We’ll take care of it. We have the machinery.”)
This is fake. Local multimedia news platform Global Daily Mirror — whose logo, website URL and contact details can be seen in the circulating post — denied publishing the graphic.
In an Oct. 13 message to VERA Files Fact Check, the multimedia group said they will “take appropriate action” against its impostor.
The fake quote card appears to be a manipulation of a social media card originally posted by the Global Daily Mirror on Sept. 17, where Robredo was quoted as saying she was willing to face Marcos in the 2022 elections.
The fabricated graphic was first published last month by the page DU30 Calbayog City and Sta. Margarita, Samar Chapter, among other FB accounts. It was revived by a netizen on Oct. 10, three days after Robredo declared her candidacy for president. The post has 250 engagements.
