Halos doble ang bilang ng mga online scam na na-fact-check ngayong taon ng VERA Files kumpara noong nakaraang taon. Mula Jan. 1 hanggang Dec. 8, 2023, nakapag-fact-check ang VERA Files ng 78 scam posts na maaaring nakapambiktima ng maraming Pilipino.
Higit kalahati (45) rito ay pekeng ads na nagpo-promote o nagbebenta ng mga gamot at health products — lahat maliban sa dalawa ay hindi rehistrado sa Food and Drug Administration ng bansa.
Modus ng ganitong klaseng scam ang paggamit ng mga edited na litrato o lumang video ng mga kilalang personalidad sa social media at medisina, gaya ng mag-asawang Willie at Liza Ong at ni Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire. Pinagmumukhang mga endorser sila ng produktong ibinebenta sa scam posts kahit hindi naman talaga.
Ang iba naman ay mga pekeng giveaway, hindi totoong anunsyo ng pamimigay ng ayuda, o bogus na bagsak-presyong bentahan ng mga produkto. Marami sa mga ito ay ipino-post gamit ang mga pekeng account na nagpapanggap bilang media organizations, mga ahensya ng gobyerno at mga pribadong kumpanya.
