Ang Ayungin Shoal ay isang low-tide elevation na hindi maaaring angkinin o maging paksa ng isang sovereignty claim sa ilalim ng international law. Malinaw na nakasaad sa final at binding award sa South China Sea arbitration noong Hulyo 12, 2016 na ang Ayungin Shoal ay "nasa loob ng exclusive economic zone at continental shelf ng Pilipinas" kung saan ang Pilipinas ay may sovereign rights at hurisdiksyon, sinabi ng Department of Foreign Affairs sa isang pahayag, na sinang-ayunan ng National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea.
