President Rodrigo Duterte has declared the fourth Sunday of November of every year as National Bicycle Day to highlight the importance of non-motorized transportation as a means of fostering sustainable development and promoting environmental health.

A total of 1.35 million people die in road crashes around the world annually, and World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus describes this as “the equivalent of a COVID-19 pandemic every single year."
